The German Propaganda
Book Shop
Hello, I'm
Randall Bytwerk. I'm a professor at Calvin College with an interest
in propaganda. As part of my scholarly work, I maintain the German Propaganda Archive,
a collection of English-language translations of propaganda material
from the Nazi and East German eras. I buy a lot of material to translate,
some of which I list for sale here when I am finished with it. Newer
items are listed first. Postage costs are for the U.S. International
postage will be higher.
If you wish to buy an item,
have questions or would like more details, drop me an email. My e-mail
address is:
- bytw2calvin.edu [Replace
the "2"
with an "@"].
Conditions: I accept payment by check or money order, or by credit
cards through PayPal. I do
my best to describe items accurately. If you buy something and feel that
I have not done so, I shall refund your purchase price. I'll adjust the
postage should you find several items you'd like.

Issues of Der Pimpf: This was the Nazi monthly
for young boys, and makes for interesting reading. There are lots
of pictures, and vivid articles. Pictures of the covers are available here and here and here.
The available issues:
- 1940: September, October
- 1941: January, February, March, April, May, October, November, December
- 1942: January, February, March, June, July, August
- 1944: January/February, March/April
These are uncommon. All
are in good condition, with the exception of September 1941, which is
in fair condition. Price: $20 each ($12 for Sept. 1941),
or all 18 for $325. Shipping: $1.50 for the first, $1 for each
additional one, or $6 for them all
Six Miniature Parole der Woche from
1940-1941: These are six of the playing-card sized Parole
der Woche, a weekly progaganda publication. #44 and #45 are
from 1940, #8, #12, #39, and #40 are from 1941. All six have anti-British
themes. They are in good condtion. #44 is more worn than the others. Price:
$65 for all six. No shipping charge for these.
Death of Hitler: This is the 2 May 1945 issue of the Hamburger
Zeitung that announces Hitler's death. Some material is available on
the GPA. Like many German papers late in the war, it has but a single
sheet. It had given up hopes of victory — various news reports
anticipate German surrender. There is even news of an upcoming table
tennis tournament. The condition is good. Rare. Price:
$60.
Shipping: $2.
31 Issues of Unser
Wille und Weg (1934-1940): I'm trying to build a
complete collection of this, which means I end up with duplicates
when I buy a stack. Unser Wille und Weg was the monthly
for propagandists down to the local group propaganda leader level.
It had nothing particularly confidential, but does provide an interesting
look at the Nazi Party's propaganda system. Articles cover everything
from anti-Semitism to how to persuade people to eat more fish.
There are numerous translations from the periodical on the GPA.
I here have 31 issues from 1934-1940 in various conditions, ranging
from poor to good. All have the complete interior text in good
condition, but the covers vary. There are eight copies of the particularly
rare 1939 and 1940 issues in large format.

I'd prefer to sell these
as a lot for $525. If you are interested in particular issues, let
me know which ones, and I'll quote a price. Uncommon.
Shipping: $6.00.
Five issues of Unser Wille und Weg: This was
the party magazine for propagandists. No illustrations, but interesting
guidance for propagandists.

- July 1937 (poor condition, but with all text; missing back cover,
$9)

Shipping: $2 for one or all.
Helmut Sündermann, Tagesparolen:
Deutsche Presseanweisungen 1939-1945 — Hitlers Propaganda und Kriegsführung (Leoni:
Druffel, 1973). Sündermann was a Nazi propaganda official, and this
is an account of Nazi press directives during the war. Sündermann was
not exactly repentent, nor is the Druffel Verlag (which published a
lot of rightist literature), but this is an interesting account of
press policy, supported by numerous quotations. This is the paperback
edition. Price: $15. Shipping: $3.
Reichsarbeitsdienst Gau
History: This is a remarkable volume — a hand-crafted
history of the Nazi labor organization along
the Rhine. It has to
have been produced in a very limited edition. It consists of descriptions
of labor activity in the various districts in typical Nazi verbiage,
with typography ranging
from type to elegant script, along with
lots of illustrations, maps,
and more. It was issued around 1935. This is an unusual
book. It is in very good condition. Rare. Price:
$300. Shipping:
$6.
The Attack on Cologne:
This is a 62-page pamphlet issued after the massive 1942 bombing raid
on Cologne. Originally published in 1942, this is a 1943 reprint that
brought the number in print to 200,000. A full
translation is available on the
GPA. Price: $18. Postage: $2.
Kampf um's Dritte Reich (Altona:
Zigaretten-Bilderdienst Altona-Bahrenfeld, 1933). This is the less
common of the two 1933 "cigarette books." It has over one
hundred color illustrations of the Nazi rise to power (tinted photographs).
It has the misfortune of presenting Ernst Röhm in a favorable light — it was only in summer 1934 that he became
a villain. In this copy, the original owner has written "traitor," or
a similar remark, wherever Röhm's
picture appears. Condition: Good, with all photographs
intact. Some age spotting, and wear along the edges. Price: $175.
Shipping: $5.
5 issues of Frage und Antwort: This
folder contains five 1950 issues of Frage und Antwort, guidance
for East German agitators. The topids covered include the intelligentsia,
the post-WWII German border with Poland, the GDR government, economics,
and other East German political parties. Fair to good condition. Price:
$12. Shipping: $2.
Eugen Hadamovsky, Blitzmarsch nach Warschau. Frontberichte eines
politischen Soldaten (Munich: Zentralverlag der NSDAP,
1940). Besides the book below, Hadamovsky wrote a number of other popular
propaganda books. This one is an account of the events leading up to,
and during, the Polish campaign. No illustrations, one map. The book
is in good condition. Price: $18. Shipping: $3.50.
Kleine
Kriegshefte:
This was a series of eleven 32-page pamphlets issued during
the first two years of the war. They contained war correspondent reports,
and a lot of maps and photographs. I have copies of #3 ($22),
#9 ($21), and #11 ($20) for sale. Follow the link for details on content.
Shipping: $2.00.
A
July 1953 issue of the Notizbuch
des Agitators: This was the monthly for agitators
in the German Democratic Republic, going to thousands of them around
the country, who were expected to propagandize their fellow workers.
This rather interesting issue appeared the month after the 17 June 1953
uprisings in East Germany. It begins with an article laying out what
has to be done to improve agitation. There are other articles
on the subject as well. A total of 84 pages. No illustrations, so this
will interest you only if you can read German. Uncommon.
Price: $11. Shipping: $1.50.
Graf Ernst zu Reventlow, Von
Potsdam nach Doorn (Berlin: M. A. Klieber Verlag, 1940).
8th printing. Reventlow was a prominent early Nazi. This 490-page
hardcover treats German history from Bismark through Wilhelm II
from a Nazi perspective. Wilhelm II does not come out of it well.
No illustrations. Good condition. Price: $20.
Shipping: $3.
A page on the red and blue books on the Nuremberg
Rallies, published from 1933-1938. I currently do not have any
copies for sale, but the page may be of use to those interested in the
volumes.
I have also written
three books on the subject. My recent
book titled Landmark Speeches of National Socialism includes
material not available on the GPA. Bending
Spines: The Propagandas of Nazi Germany and the German Democratic
Republic (Michigan
State University Press, 2004) provides an analysis of much
of the material on the German Propaganda Archive. It can be ordered
in the United States through amazon.com in either the hardcover
or paperback editions.
My first book is on Julius
Streicher, the leading Nazi anti-Semite.
If you are interested in new books on the subject of German propaganda,
I maintain a list of
titles that can be ordered through amazon.com. I also have
a list of more general
books on Nazism that I've read and recommend.
